At its congregational meeting on March 25, United Church of Chapel Hill, U.C.C., by unanimous vote endorsed the following resolution:

“We believe LGBT people should have the rights of all citizens including the right to marry. Thus by resolution adopted at a congregational meeting on March 25, 2012, the congregation of the United Church of Chapel Hill pledges action to encourage our citizens to vote against Amendment One.”

Consistent with this resolution and as co-pastor of United Church of Chapel Hill, I urge the voters of our state to vote “no” on Amendment One on May 8. Our Christian denomination, The United Church of Christ, has been marrying same-gender couples since the early ’80s. We are pleading with our state and with our country to honor our religious freedom to do so. We believe that no right is more precious than the freedom to enter into marriage, thus in 2005 the General Synod of the United Church of Christ affirmed “marriage equality” for heterosexual and same-gender couples.

We should recognize that marriage controversies are nothing new: Two hundred years ago there was debate about whether slaves should be allowed to marry; 150 years ago it was whether married women should remain their husband’s property or whether women should be regarded as their own persons with full rights and responsibilities; 45 years ago there was controversy concerning the freedom of interracial couples to marry. More recently the freedom to marry has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court as fundamental to our humanity – in the mid 1980s the court ruled on whether incarcerated prisoners on death row retained the right to marry even though their marriages would never be consummated. The court said “yes,” death row inmates should have the freedom to marry because it found this freedom to be a person-defining freedom, essential to human identity and community. Marriage, the justices affirmed, is a fundamental human right.

Christian ethicist Marvin Ellison has written, “To deny any group of our citizens the right to marry is not a minor inconvenience nor merely unpleasant, but rather an exclusion that is dehumanizing, oppressive, unjust, and violates the religious freedom of Christians who recognize these marriages.”

Let’s protect the fundamental freedoms of North Carolina’s citizens: the freedom to practice one’s faith according to the dictates of one’s church and the freedom to marry the person of one’s choosing. Let’s protect all families and children in North Carolina. On May 8, vote “no” on Amendment One.

A newly-unearthed photograph showing Mitt Romney demonstrating in favour of the Vietnam War draft might leave the presidential candidate feeling somewhat embarrassed.

The veteran Republican, then 19, can be seen picketing an anti-war sit-in at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, in 1966.

Romney received a draft exemption based upon his status as a “minister of religion” - basically, an exemption for having been a Mormon missionary. He received numerous deferments after that for educational reasons. Romney portrays his mission in Paris as a time of humbling poverty, but The Daily Telegraph has a different story:

The Republican presidential hopeful spent a significant portion of his 30-month mission in a Paris mansion described by fellow American missionaries to The Daily Telegraph as “palace”. It featured stained glass windows, chandeliers, and an extensive art collection and was staffed by two servants.

For most of 1968, Romney lived in the Mission Home, a 19th century neoclassical building in the French capital’s chic 16th arrondissement. “It was a house built by and for rich people,” said Richard Anderson, the son of the mission president at the time of Romney’s stay. Tearful as he described the house, Mr Anderson, 70, of Kaysville, Utah, said Romney aides had asked him not to speak publicly about their time together there.

Romney said of his French lodgings: “I don’t recall any of them having a refrigerator. We shopped before every meal”. Anderson said that as well as a refrigerator, the mansion had “a Spanish chef called Pardo and a house boy, who prepared lunch and supper five days a week”.

Romney added in his comments that “most of the apartments I lived in had no shower or bathtub”. He said: “If we were lucky, we actually bought a hose and we stuck it on the sink.” He said he was forced to use a hole in the ground and a bucket for a lavatory and said, “I lived in a way that people of lower middle income in France lived, and said to myself, ‘Wow, I sure am lucky to have been born in the United States of America.’”

Sounds rough, no? Perhaps it was this time of strife that led him to make his most recent housing decision:

It recently emerged that Mr Romney has plans to quadruple the size of his $12 million California home. The 64-year-old filed an application in San Diego, California, to bulldoze his 3,009-square-foot oceanfront mansion in La Jolla and replace it with an 11,062-square-foot property.

A campaign official said that the GOP hopeful was planning the expansion as the home he bought three years ago ‘is inadequate for their needs’.

All Americans should be impressed at the demonstrated effectiveness of the AMBER system in locating missing and kidnapped children. However, I would ask my colleagues to consider that one of the factors that makes the current AMBER system so effective is that the AMBER Alert system is not a Federal program. Instead, states and local governments developed AMBER Alerts on their own, thus ensuring that each AMBER system meets the unique needs of individual jurisdictions. Once the AMBER Alert system becomes a one-size-fits all Federal program (with standards determined by DC-based bureaucrats instead of community-based law enforcement officials) local officials will not be able to tailor the AMBER Alert to fit their unique circumstances. Thus, nationalizing the AMBER system will cause this important program to lose some of its effectiveness.

This at first seems like a reasonable argument.

The federal government is shit at almost everything it does.

However, I thought about it, which is why I posted it.

If a child goes missing, they don’t go missing at just at the state level. They go missing at the national - No, the universal level. The least we can do is have a coordinated effort to find a child all across the United States. This bill ensures interstate coordination in the search to find lost children.

And Ron Paul voted against it, in the name of the oh so sacred constitution.

Since when does a 1lb of beef only feed one person? It feeds my whole family and yields leftovers. People who eat meat don’t just eat slabs of meat; we eat grains as well.

Also, world hunger is the result of poor distribution of wealth not lack of food. I care about the environment, about world hunger, and about animals, but I’m probably never going to be vegan/vegetarian. Going veg works for some people but not for everyone.

I had the exact same thought about the 1lb of beef feeding 1 person. Even if you’re planning to feed meat as a main dish to a crowd of people, the standard rule of thumb is to have 1/4 lb per person… and unless that crowd is a group of teenage boys, there will always be leftovers.

Also… how does 15 pounds of grains only feed a couple of people? With 15 pounds of any grain, you could feed a metric shit ton of people OR several-to-many people over a long-ass period of time.
